These Caramelized Onions are rich with flavor, have a perfect texture, and are a great addition to many dishes: put them on a pizza, slide them in an omelette, make some french onion soup!
And the best part? They’re extremely easy to make as long as you have a little bit of patience…
Caramelized Onions
Ingredients:
1 Large or 2 Medium Sweet/Yellow Onions
3 tbsp. Unsalted Butter
2 tsp. Kosher Salt
Pinch of Granulated Sugar
Steps:
1. Cut onion(s) into halves and cut into thin slices, (roughly 1/8th-1/4th of an inch).
2. In a large pan with high sides or a medium-sized pot, melt the butter over medium heat.
3. Once completely melted, add roughly half of the onion to the pot and stir to coat with butter.
4. After onions have cooked down slightly and reduced in size, (but not yet translucent), add the rest of the onion and stir to evenly distribute.
5. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and stir to evenly distribute. Repeat.
6. Continue to cook on medium heat until onions cook down further and appear translucent, (should take anywhere from 10-20 minutes).
7. Once onions appear translucent, turn heat down to medium-low or low, depending on the strength of your burner.
8. Continue to cook onions and stir occasionally for 50-70 minutes as they slowly start to brown.
9. When onions appear to look light golden, (not quite brown), add a pinch of granulated sugar while stirring onions. (This will help the sugar from clumping to one spot.) You can also stop at this step if you like your onions on the saltier/less sweet side!
10. Continue cooking and stirring occasionally until onions become a deep brown color.
11. Remove from heat and transfer to a bowl.
12. Enjoy!
Notes:
1. I use this frequently as a pizza topping, (probably my favorite!)
2. Can add beef or vegetable stock and some extra spices to pot and continue cooking for a simple french onion soup. (But don’t forget to top it with gruyere! Just add to an oven-safe bowl and top with cheese, then place under broiler until the cheese is perfectly melted.)
